Once there lived a farmer who worked hard and lived a contented life. One day his horse, which he depended on for his work ran away. On hearing this,  his friends came by and expressed their sympathy.  “This is such sad news, you must be worried” they said. The farmer simply shrugged his shoulders and went about his work.

Next day the horse came back followed by three wild horses.  The farmer’s friends were excited and said “this wonderful, you must be so happy!” The farmer shrugged his shoulders and went about his work.

Seeing the new horses, the farmer’s son decided to ride one of wild horses. He was thrown and broke his leg. The friends came by again and expressed their sympathy at his son’s misfortune.  The farmer shrugged his shoulder and went about his work.

A few days later the military officials came to draft young men into the army. The farmer’s son was excused as he had a broken leg.  The friends came by and said, “how well the broken leg had worked out for the farmer and his son”.  The farmer simply shrugged his shoulders and continued with his work.
