There was once a popular Monastery, well know for its strict ways of teaching. People came from far to study there.

Disciples took a vow of silence for ten years at a time. At the end of ten years they were allowed to speak two words, and then go back into silence for another ten years.

One monk, after spending his first ten years in silence went to the teacher to speak his two words.  Teacher asked him what his two words were.  The monk said “bad bed”. The teacher smiled and asked the Monk to return to his silence.

Another ten years passed and monk came again to the teacher.  The teacher asked him for his two words.  The monk said “bad food”, the teacher smiled and asked him to return to his silence.

Another ten years passed and the monk came back to the teacher.  The teacher once again asked him what his two words were.  The monk replied “I quit”. The teacher said, “I can see why, all you ever do is complain”.
