Once,  a rich merchant's house was robbed. The merchant believed the thief had to be one of his servants. So he went to Birbal and mentioned the incident. Birbal came to the Merchant’s house and asked all the servants to come to the main hall.  He told them of the theft and asked if anyone in the room is responsible for the theft.  All the servants kept quite.

Birbal thought for a moment, than he said, not to worry, he had another way of finding out who the thief was, he gave each one of them a stick and told them to take it home and bring it back the next day.  He also told them, that the stick of the thief would grow by two inches the next day.

All the servants went to their homes and came back the next day with their sticks. Birbal went to each one of them and examined their sticks.  And as he had expected, he found one of them had a stick that was two inches shorter than the rest.  He told the merchant, that was the thief.

The merchant asked Birbal how he had found out.  Birbal explained, the thief had cut his stick by two inches as he had thought his stick will grow by two inches by the next morning.
